Benzoyl peroxide is one of the most clinically-studied and effective over-the-counter acne treatments available, recommended by dermatologists worldwide. It works by killing Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) — the bacteria responsible for inflammatory acne — and by reducing excess sebum production that clogs pores. Unlike antibiotics, P. acnes cannot develop resistance to benzoyl peroxide, making it suitable for long-term acne management. The PanOxyl 4% Creamy Wash delivers BP in a wash-off format that minimises irritation while still being highly effective on face, back, chest and body breakouts.

Use as a regular face or body wash — wet skin, apply a small amount to affected areas, gently massage for 1–2 minutes (this contact time is critical for the BP to work), then rinse thoroughly. Start with 1 use per day (PM) for the first 1–2 weeks to build tolerance, then increase to twice daily if well-tolerated. Visible improvement in active breakouts typically appears in 2–4 weeks; full results in 8–12 weeks. Always pair with a non-comedogenic moisturiser to prevent dryness, and SPF50+ in the morning since BP increases UV sensitivity.

Yes — benzoyl peroxide is a powerful oxidising agent that can bleach fabrics, hair, eyebrows, towels, pillowcases and clothing. Use white towels when drying after washing, sleep on white pillowcases on nights you've used PanOxyl, and avoid contact with coloured clothing while the product is on your skin. The bleaching effect is permanent on fabrics — once it bleaches, the colour is gone. For coloured hair (especially brunette or dyed hair), be careful around the hairline to avoid lightening hair colour over time.

Be careful with active stacking. Avoid using PanOxyl on the same day as retinol or AHA/BHA exfoliants — the combined drying and exfoliation can severely irritate the skin barrier. A safe approach: PanOxyl in the morning, retinol in the evening (with a moisturiser in between). Avoid combining with prescription antibiotics like clindamycin unless directed by a dermatologist (though this combination is sometimes prescribed). Never use with hydrocortisone or strong topicals without medical guidance. Always patch-test before starting and introduce gradually.

Topical benzoyl peroxide is generally considered low-risk during pregnancy and breastfeeding when used in limited concentrations and over limited areas — it's one of the few acne treatments that can be used during pregnancy (unlike retinoids, salicylic acid in high doses, or oral antibiotics). However, always consult your obstetrician or dermatologist before starting any acne treatment during pregnancy. The PanOxyl 4% Creamy Wash is the lower-strength variant; the 10% version may be considered too strong for pregnancy use without medical guidance.
